Prada commissioned Jacob Sutton to create two short films showcasing winner Dario Costa’s custom-made flight suit for the Red Bull Air Race World Series. To capture impossible aerial shots, Jacob used carefully choreographed technocrane camera moves on the runway, which were then composited into the sky in post. The process began with Jacob building a cardboard model of the plane, placing it on a tripod, and filming dynamic sequences with his iPhone. This served as a rough guide to choreograph the shots, which were refined in the virtual studio using a 3D model of Dario’s plane. The goal was to stay within the movement constraints of a technocrane while capturing the fluidity of the action. We knew the plane would have to remain static so if we wanted it to roll away from the camera, we had to think about what the inverse of that motion would be, and perform that with the camera instead; furthermore, owing to personnel limitations on the airfield, we had to supervise the entire shoot remotely. Once the edit was locked, we tracked the footage of the Italian skies and positioned our plane within it. Everything was rotoscoped so that we could replace the background, including that refracted through the cockpit, with our new scenic backplate. It was shot at a very high framerate so we added all the motion blur back in, to recreate the sensation of soaring off into the sunset at high speed.
